Do you know what the only native animal is to Iceland? It is the Arctic Fox! It is the only land animal that is native to Iceland. The Arctic Fox’s fur is brown in the summer and white in the winter, and they are so adorable.

The largest populations of the Arctic fox is found in the Westfjords, where birdlife is most abundant. Foxes are protected from hunting in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve and this where the fox thrive!  They are solitary animals and are hunted by humans and polar bears. Arctic foxes generally live 3 to 6 years and eat berries, birds, insects, eggs, amphibians, reptiles and small mammals, both living and dead.

Whenever we go on a trip or visit a state or country, we will buy a Christmas ornament as a memory – we hang it up on our travel tree each year. We searched high and low for an ornament that was an Arctic Fox, but no souvenir or other store had one. We ended up purchasing a red lava rock ornament. I asked one of the ladies that worked at one of the souvenir stores why they didn’t have an Arctic Fox as an ornament and she stated, “That’s a very good question”. There are just none available.
