When you are driving down the road you see a lot of Shell Gas Stations, but have you seen one of the 1930s clamshell shaped Shell Oil service stations? She’s a beauty. This is the last clamshell Shell Oil service station in the United States. You can find this rare roadside attraction in Winston Salem, NC.
This service station operated from the 1930s through the 1950s. It is now protected and preserved by Preservation North Carolina.
I would recommend that any time you are driving by Winston Salem, NC, take the time to stop by for a few minutes to take a step back in time, a time where many companies were taking their product or logo and turning them into buildings to draw crowds into their business. This was their form of marketing.
When up close and in person to this station, even the pumps are really neat as you don’t see pumps like this today. The bright yellow and red colors pop and I can see me wanting to have my gas pumped from this type of station. This clamshell Shell Oil service station can be found at: 1111 E. Sprague Street, Winston Salem, NC 27107.
