Don’t Underestimate the Value of a Hair Dryer

Last week, in general conversation I had mentioned to my husband that I would really like the dyson supersonic hair dryer. I didn’t think much of it and that evening my husband started a conversation on this topic. He had looked up the dryer and saw the price tag! I figure most couples in a shared financial relationship will have these same types of questions so I thought I would document them here for you. Here were my responses:

  1. Why do you feel you need a new hair dryer?
    • Well, the type of hair dryers that I buy ($50- $75) go bad within a couple years and it is getting that time to replace it.
  2. Why do you feel it is time to replace your hair dryer? Is it broken?
    • It’s not broken, but even after cleaning the lint out of the back of the dryer for the 10th time, it is starting to have a burning smell when I use it.
  3. What is so special about the Dyson hair dryer that makes it different than any other hair dryer?
    • At this point I knew that he was trying to figure out why I really wanted this hair dryer. So I actually pondered this question and gave these points: I hear it is quieter. I wash my hair at night and you are usually asleep so I won’t wake you up and I won’t go to bed with my hair wet; I hear it makes your hair shiny – I don’t know how, it just does! Roll eye from my husband on this one; and last, but not least, I like the design of it, it is different. Oh, and I like the color of it as well!!
  4. Last question – do you think it would be cheaper to buy several dryers in the lifetime of this hair dryer?
    • Yes, of course I could buy several $75 hair dryers in the lifespan of buying a dyson hair dryer at $400.

A few days later my husband and I are having lunch together when our doorbell rings. He comes in and says that he has a package for me. Low and behold he had ordered the dyson hair dryer for me! That evening I washed my shoulder-length hair and my hair was dry in 5 minutes! I can’t speak to the shininess (still don’t know where that comes from or how), but I do love that the weight of the dryer is in the handle and that it isn’t top heavy like most dryers . The reason for this is that the motor is in the handle. The air on the lowest setting of the dyson is the air I typically get out of a regular hair dryer on high. It is easy to control and I love the look of it.

Hopefully the dyson hair dryer will last for many, many years as I would have to buy quite a few $75 hair dryers in that lifespan to make up for it!! dyson has some great videos on how to perform different hair styles using this type of dryer with various hair types. I have tried them and they do work. If you are one of those that spends a couple hundred dollars every few weeks at the hair stylist then this may actually be a cheaper alternative for you (blow outs, styles using the dryer, etc.).

What type of hair dryer do you use and what styling techniques are your favorite in using a hair dryer?
