If you happen to be driving along Franklin Road in Highland NC, I definitely recommend a stop at this beautiful covered bridge. The Will Henry Stevens Covered Bridge , formerly Bagley Bridge, is a wooden structure that is 87 foot, 5 inch long. It is one of the oldest covered bridges in America and provide a one-way drive entrance to The Bascom’s Center for the Visual Arts.
Unfortunately, the center was closed due to COVID; however, the bridge is not roped off. We pulled off to the side of the road and took some great pictures from outside and within the bridge.
It was around noon when we stopped by this bridge and we were a little hungry. At the time, travel was limited due to COVID. We had passed a barbecue place about a mile prior to the bridge and decided to go get a bite. We arrived at the Highland’s Smokehouse and it was a little busy. We were uncomfortable sitting in a restaurant that was pretty busy. We had a blanket in our car so we decided we would get our order to-go and we then drove back to the bridge and had a picnic lunch on the lawn. This was very spontaneous, but also was a wonderful experience. I couldn’t tell you the last time my husband and I had a romantic picnic. The food was delicious as well!
This stop is good for picnics, visiting the arts center (when open), and of course it is great for viewing and walking on the covered bridge, viewing the old corn crib on the property and other experiences.
If you are a couple or a family, this is a perfect place to stop for a covered bridge picture opportunity! You can visit the bridge and The Bascom’s Center for the Visual Arts at 323 Franklin Rd, Highlands, NC 28741.
