South Carolina – Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken (Hartsville, SC)

Sign of the last remaining Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken chain restaurant (12/17/21)

My husband and I took a spontaneous weekend trip to Sumter, SC. We left on a Friday evening and stopped in the town of Hartsville, SC to try out Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken. This happens to be their only restaurant in operation today.

Yogi Bear’s Honey Fried Chicken has quite the history. Eugene Bloom founded and opened a chain of these restaurants in 1968. Hanna Barbera gave Eugene Bloom a license to the Yogi Bear character, hence the name and branding for this restaurant. Hardees bought the restaurant chain, but chicken was not as popular as burgers so they did not give the chain as much as attention and the restaurants started closing down. As mentioned previously, the only restaurant in existence today is the location in Hartsville, SC.

I didn’t get the honey taste within the crust of the chicken; however, I did dip the chicken into honey to give me the taste I was craving. If you are a traveler that loves to look at roadside history then this is definitely a place you will want to stop and visit.
