Weeksville Airship Hangar in Elizabeth City, NC

Weeksville Airship Hangar (Elizabeth City, NC)

On one of our road trips we stopped in Elizabeth City, NC. Elizabeth City is situated in the northeastern corner of North Carolina on the Pasquotank River and Intracoastal Waterway and lies west of the Outer Banks of North Carolina and south of Virginia Beach, Virginia. One of the places we knew we wanted to see was the Weeksville Airship Hangar. It is a hangar that was built during WWII to house and service the United States Navy’s blimps. As you can see from the photo – look at the water tower in front of the hangar – it is quite large! According to Weeksville Airship Hangar – Elizabeth City, North Carolina – Atlas Obscura, it measures 20 stories high and nearly 1,000 feet wide.

This facility has some interesting history, and I would encourage you to read the article in the link above. When you do find this piece of treasure you can only go so far as it is on private property and there are no tours for this facility. The great news is that this airship hangar is used today for testing by TCOM Airships. TCOM is the global leader in aerostat persistent surveillance solutions, providing total domain awareness over air, land and sea.
