Exploring Petra – One of the 7 Wonders of the World

Exploring Petra
Exploring Petra’s Treasury

WHY IT’S AMAZING
Petra is called the “Rose Red City’ due to the color of the stone from which it is carved. The winding path through Petra’s Siq is just over a mile long. It is a beautiful walk among a lane that is surrounded by sheer narrow towering cliffs. The thin path suddenly opens up and reveals the Treasury in all its beauty! While exploring Petra, keep walking to see the Theatre, Royal Tombs and Monastery! There are also hiking trails in Petra (Main Trail, High Place of Sacrifice, Monastery Trail, and Treasury Viewpoint Trail). Plan to spend a good portion of the day visiting Petra! There are 2,640 acres to explore!

Exploring Petra Travel Tips:

Exploring Petra Travel Tips:

Not only is Petra one of the seven wonders of the world it is also one of five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Jordan. Petra is the most famous tourist attraction in Jordan.

Petra has the largest royal tomb complexes in the world and has more tombs than the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt. To-date, approximately 1,000 individual royal tombs have been identified within Petra.

Plan to visit Petra early in the day. It is beautiful seeing the sun rise and reflect on the rocks. Also, it will be cooler for you. Even though the path through the Siq to get to the Treasury is just over a mile, take into consideration you will need to at least tackle two miles (to and back). Also, consider the temperature at the time of day you will be walking so plan your time accordingly!

When you are facing the Treasury, get up close and look at the top where the urn is located. You will see a bunch of gunshot holes where people mistakenly believed treasures existed within the urn. This site was the final resting place of the Nabatean king, Aretas IV. The local Bedouins nicknamed it the Treasury as they believed that it contained treasures.

It’s about 3 miles one way to get to the Monastery. Once there you will need to climb the roughly 850 steps to get to it. These steps are ancient steps, so they come in all types of sizes. Some baby steps and some very giant steps.

If you are tired of walking there are donkeys, mules, and camels that are available for use for a price. I will warn you that the people haggling with you over price may low ball the price to get the job, but then when they get you to your drop off point, they will try and haggle you for more money so be very careful of this! Apparently, the government puts a minimum fee for these tour purchases, but some people will low ball it to get the business and then they don’t want to follow through on what they negotiated!

Don’t forget to check out the aqueduct system as you walk through the Siq!

There is so much to explore. Bring plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated. There are many hiking trails. You can climb, walk, explore, etc.
