Junaluska Dam Park

Lake Junaluska Dam in Junaluska, NC

WHY IT’S AMAZING

Lake Junaluska is a manmade lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains of NC and was formed by damming Richland Creek. It was constructed between 1911 and 1913.

It is named after nearby Mount Junaluska which was named after a Cherokee Chief Junaluska.

Lake Junaluska has opened its dam to draw down the lake, as it does every few years to allow for silt removal as well as repairs, maintenance and litter cleanup. We happened to be here during the draw down. It was a wonderful experience to listen to the sound of the water coming off the dam.

As you can see from the pictures you can get right up to the dam. There is also a road and walking sidewalk above the dam.
