Please see my post on Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve – Al Maha (Marriott Bonvoy Luxury Desert Resort & Spa) if you are interested about this resort and spa. As part of one of our activities, we chose Falconry. Okay, not everyone is interested in Falconry, but I have to say it was more exciting than one might expect, especially when you are in the desert amongst wild animals.
In the Middle East, Falconry was used for hunting for the Bedouins. Bedouins were Arab people who lived and traveled from place to place in the Middle Eastern deserts. They were animal herders who migrated into the desert during the rainy winter season and moved back toward the cultivated land in the dry summer months. Bedouin tribes have traditionally been classified according to the animal species that are the basis of their livelihood. Camel nomads occupy huge territories/ranges and are organized into large tribes while sheep and goat nomads have smaller ranges.
Falcons have terrific vision and are hunters. The Bedouins relied on the Falcon as one way to find food in the desert. With their sharp vision, Falcons can see prey that is out of rifle range. A Bedouin person would capture a falcon and train the falcon by having the falcon get used to his voice as well as the falcon starting to rely on the Bedouin person for food. After about four weeks of training, the falcon will grab its prey, but this time for the Bedouin person.
The Al Maha resort has two types of falcons as well as one Eagle as part of their Falconry activities.
