Coconut Honey Sugar Lip Scrub

Coconut Honey Sugar Lip Scrub

Our recipe today is a fun recipe inspired from our trip to New Zealand and takes 5 minutes to make.  You can easily reduce the recipe or double, triple the recipe.  It depends on how much you want to make.  There are only 3 simple ingredients – that’s it.

Recipe:

  • 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil (this is for moisturizing; lips are very sensitive to moisture loss – the coconut oil will help to heal and moisturize dry lips)
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons Honey (soothes dry lips by drawing moisture from the air into your skin as well as helping your skin maintain moisture)
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar – this is the exfoliant that removes dead skin from your lips

Directions:

  • Mix all three ingredients together and place in air-tight container
  • Remove makeup
  • Apply scrub to lips and massage for 1 – 2 minutes
  • Wipe off scrub with a damp cloth
  • Perform 2 times per week and can store for up to 6 months

Please note that if you have really chapped lips to the point that they really hurt or that they are bleeding, please do not use the sugar, make a serum with the coconut oil and honey and massage into lips.  You don’t even need to wipe off the serum – just rub into your lips and continue on with your next beauty routine.

Don’t fret if any of the scrub or serum gets on your tongue or gets in your mouth – all ingredients are natural and healthy to ingest.

Now I want you to think of how easy that was to make – look how cheap it was in the scheme of things and the ingredients are natural.  If using my recipe, it makes about 1.25 oz. of lip scrub.

Just to give you a comparison, I went online to check a few lip scrubs that are for sale on various sites:

  • one lip scrub was selling for $44 for 1.05 ounces – they had 16 ingredients in their product
  • one lip scrub was selling for $45 for 1.8 ounces – they had 12 ingredients in their product
  • the last lip scrub I looked at was selling for $40 for 2 ounces – they had 24 ingredients in their product and 3rd on the list was water

So feel good knowing not only did you make a good product that is good for you, you made a great product that has few ingredients, is non-toxic, is very easy to make and contributes to your outer beauty.

Travel/Educational Element:

This recipe was brought to you from one of our trips to New Zealand where they rely on and use Mānuka honey. Mānuka honey is very special to the Kiwis.  What is Mānuka?  Mānuka is a small evergreen tree found in remote regions of New Zealand.  It blooms its flower in summer months, and is greatly loved by bees.  It is considered a treasure and is used for everything from tools, medicine and food.  There are several elements of the tree:

  • Leaves:
    • Reduction of fever, treatment urinary and stomach issues; tea and beer were made via brewed leaves
  • Gum of the Tree:
    • Reducing coughs, used as a moisturizer for burns
  • Bark:
    • Mouthwash, Sedatives, treatment for fever and diarrhea
  • Flowers:
    • Pollen for Honey

I hope you enjoy this simple and easy recipe. Please let me know how it worked for you! I would love to hear your feedback.
