Recipe:
- 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil (this is for moisturizing; lips are very sensitive to moisture loss – the coconut oil will help to heal and moisturize dry lips)
- 1 Tablespoon peppermint candy (6 pieces) or candy cane (1 1/4 .44 oz candy cane) (soothes dry lips by drawing moisture from the air into your skin as well as helping your skin maintain moisture)
- 1 Tablespoon Sugar (this is the exfoliant that removes dead skin from your lips)
Directions:
- Mix all three ingredients together and place in air-tight container
- Remove makeup
- Apply scrub to lips and massage for 1 – 2 minutes
- Wipe off scrub with a damp cloth
- Perform 2 times per week and can store for up to 6 months
Please note that if you have really chapped lips to the point that they really hurt or that they are bleeding, please do not use this sugar scrub until your lips are healed.
If you want a simple serum you can put on your lips without having to exfoliate, please see the notes I have made on the perfect serum for your lips to help them heal.
Don’t fret if any of the scrub gets on your tongue or gets in your mouth – all ingredients are natural and healthy to ingest.
Now I want you to think of how easy that was to make – look how cheap it was in the scheme of things and the ingredients are natural. If using my recipe, it makes about 1.5 oz. of lip scrub.
So feel good knowing not only did you make a good product that is good for you, you made a great product that has few ingredients, is non-toxic, is very easy to make and contributes to your outer beauty.
Educational Element:
There are many health benefits from peppermint (teas, oils, etc.):
- Potential assistance with digestive issues, inclusive of nausea
- Potential assistance with eliminating bad breath
- Potential assistance with relief from headaches
- Potential assistance with ease of a cold or cough
- Potential assistance with reduced nasal congestion
- Some even claim that just by smelling peppermint that it suppresses your appetite (I have tried several of these and they have helped, I need to actually try this one next)
There is menthol in peppermint oil:
- Please do not use its scrub for more than it was intended – do not apply this lip scrub to the faces or chests of babies and young children. It is great as a lip scrub, but make sure it is used only as intended (for teens and up)
- Peppermint can also be toxic to pets so please ensure you keep the lip scrub in a sealed container and out of the reach of pets.
History of the Candy Cane
This inspiration of this recipe was brought to you from Germany. The original candy cane was created in Germany in 1670. A choir director wanted his boy’s choir to be on their best behavior for a ceremony. He had taken the classic a classic candy stick (just a white sugar candy stick) and formed a crook on the end to resemble a shepherd’s crook.
Who is from Wooster, Ohio? Your town gets the prize for making the candy cane popular in the United States. In 1847 a gentleman by the name of August Imgard hung the candy canes from a small tree. Since he was a German-Swedish immigrant, this was more than likely a custom he brought over from his home land.
In the late 1800s to early 1900s as manufacturing took off and mass production was available, the red stripe and the peppermint flavor was added. Of course today you can find candy canes in all different types of flavors.
How do you consider a properly eaten candy cane? Do you start at the curved end (crook) or do you start at the straight end? I start at the curved end (crook). A survey tells me I am in the minority on this, but regardless of how you eat a candy cane, I am sure it tastes the same.
I hope you enjoy this simple and easy recipe. What did you enjoy most about making this product or the results of this product? I would love to hear your feedback.
