Perlan Museum

Perlan Museum

This is part two of a wonderful tour we had in Iceland that was a combo tour with Sólhestar, which is a family run business. Part one was a horse back ride amidst the red lava rocks, while part two is a trip to the Perlan Museum, also known as Perlan – Wonders of Iceland. When translating Perlan to English, it means ‘The Pearl’. The two sweet young ladies that initially picked us up for the horse riding tour drove us to the Perlan Museum after our horse riding tour was complete.

The museum is pretty new, and the first exhibition in the museum is The Glaciers and Ice Cave Exhibition. This is the first in door ice cave in the world. The museum utilized six hot water tanks to create and simulate the glaciers and an ice cave, the tunnels go about 328 feet. It gave us a great opportunity to walk and roam through a simulated ice cave. Within the ice cave, they have an ice chair in which you can sit in it and pose for pictures. If you have read part one of this combo tour in a previous post then you will read how cold I was. I am still FREEZING COLD! My body still has not thawed out and of course, the simulated glacier/ice cave is very cold as well. It was a great experience to be able to walk through the simulation.

There is a great observation deck offers a view over Reykjavík. It was very overcast and snowing on the day we were at the Perlan Museum; however, you can see from the pictures below, that it was a fantastic view, even with the dreariness.

Also within the museum is Áróra, the world’s first interactive planetarium film. This show is very beautiful and claming. The photography is so beautiful and the voices are very calming, but firm to tell a story of the Northern Lights. During the film they educate you on what causes the Northern Lights. Again, the photography, music and stories were beautifully put together.

Please see my blog entry regarding the Red Lava Horse Riding, which was part two of this combo tour. I finally thawed out on this particular day that night after I had a very hot shower and was under the covers for about 2 hours.
