Poinsett Bridge (Travelers Rest, SC)

Poinsett Bridge on the Old State Road (Greenville County, SC)

At 580 Callahan Mountain Rd in Travelers Rest, SC is Poinsett Bridge that was built in 1820. It is located on the Old State Road that once went from Charleston, SC through Greenville, SC to Asheville, NC. The Poinsett Bridge is made up of quarried stone with mortar, has Gothic arches and is built over Gap Creek. The Old State Road no longer exists, but the bridge still remains and is the oldest surviving bridge in SC.

This is a great roadside stop – you do need to go out of your way a little to get to this destination; however, once there, WOW! We were there a good hour and nobody else came by. This is a great place to bring kids and let them run down the mountain side, explore and play in the creek.

Gap Creek flowing under Poinsett Bridge

It’s almost as if you step back into another time and place. It is peaceful and quiet, except for the chirping of birds, the rustle of leaves from the squirrels and the cascade of continuous flowing water. If you have been streaming Outlander on Netflix, then this will give you some sense of the remoteness and architecture of this bridge.
